What are LED bulbs?
LEDs stand for Light Emitting Diode and a diode is basically an electrical device with two electrodes, an anode and cathode, that let the electricity pass. Similar to how any battery operates, anode lets the current in while the cathode lets it out. LEDs do not operate through wire filament like incandescent bulbs.
Incandescent bulbs have filaments that glow and produce both – heat and light as soon as the energy starts flowing through them. This is because they have a thin filament metal that heats up quickly upon the passage of energy for the filament to glow and produce light. LEDs have electrons that flow to produce photons which translate into the light that we can see. Unlike filaments, photons do not generate heat, hence saves a ton of energy. Additionally, LEDs require much less energy to deliver the same brightness as traditional bulbs.
What are CFL bulbs?
CFL I.e., Compact Fluorescent Lamps are an efficient alternative to incandescent bulbs due to the way they emit light and consume energy. As we know it, they have a spiral design which makes them compact as compared to incandescent bulbs. Here, the electric current passes through the tube that has argon and slight mercury vapor. Invisible UV light gets generated due to this which kindles the fluorescent coating and lights up the bulb. These bulbs use up to70% less energy than incandescent bulbs which makes them less efficient than LED bulbs.
Do LEDs really save energy as they claim?
Yes, LED lights do save energy; they consume at least 75% less energy than incandescent bulbs as the light emitted from diode is much more efficient than filament. These lights also last longer than the traditional bulbs. To add to this, LEDs also last much longer than incandescent bulbs. Because there is no filament present that will burn out, LEDs have a much longer shelf than traditional incandescent bulbs.
Do LEDs cost more than other bulbs?
Earlier the cost of LEDs used to be double than incandescent bulbs, however now, it has been reducing given of the adaptability of these bulbs among the modern consumers. Although people have understood that LEDs save more energy, some are still hesitant to pay the price. However, since LEDs require much less energy than incandescent bulbs, you will see a considerable difference in your energy bill once you switch to LEDs. Although the upfront cost of LEDs may be slightly higher, in the longer run, it eventually gets justified. Due to the cost of operation and long-term value, it is worth the switch.
